An air conditioner moves heat. It does not make cold. Refrigerant picks up heat from your indoor air at the evaporator coil and dumps it outdoors at the condenser. When any link in that loop fails, we measure pressures, temperatures and electrical draw to find it.

A fan pulls outdoor air across the condenser coil, and hot vapor condenses to liquid. Typical R-410A head pressure runs 350–450 psig on a 95°F day; newer units use R-454B.
A sealed loop: compressor, condenser, metering device (TXV or piston), evaporator. Refrigerant should never be “used up”. Low charge means a leak, which must be found and repaired.
Sits above the furnace or in the air handler. Cold refrigerant absorbs heat and moisture from indoor air. Dirty coils or low airflow can freeze it solid.
The air handler houses the blower and coil. A gas furnace adds a heat exchanger and burners. Both push conditioned air through the supply ducts.
Uses a reversing valve to run the refrigerant circuit backward, moving heat indoors in winter. Efficient in Southern California’s mild climate.

Manifold gauges, clamp meter, multimeter with capacitance, thermometers, manometer, leak detector.
Causes: failed capacitor, dead contactor, low charge, seized compressor, or a tripped breaker.
Causes: dirty filter, weak blower, low refrigerant. Turn the system off and run the fan to thaw.
Causes: oversized equipment, clogged coil, bad thermostat location, or a pressure switch tripping.
The condensate drain carries away moisture the coil removes. Algae clogs the line, and the overflow switch shuts down cooling. Expect gallons per day in humid weather.
A hum without fan or compressor start often points to a failed run capacitor. Replace it promptly, because a struggling compressor can burn out.
Air must return as fast as it is supplied. Undersized returns starve the blower and raise static pressure. Duct leakage in unconditioned attics can waste 20–30% of delivered air, a major factor in California summers.
MERV 8–11 suits most homes. Higher ratings can restrict airflow if the system was not designed for them. Check monthly and replace every 1–3 months.
Sends a 24V call for cooling, heat or fan to the control board.
A relay-style switch that sends 240V to the compressor and fan. Pitted contacts cause failures.
